Brinker is a standard preparatory school boy that dresses in fine clothes and fun suits. His narrow face that surrounds his features. He also is the six feet tall exactly. They also say that Brinker had a "substantial" butt. I think that that is odd. He is a friend of Gene and Phineas, who resigns at the school Devon. He is the age of 16 when the novel takes place. I have also found that when I read about Brinker I think of him as a detective trying to find the truth.
Brinker in the novel "A Separate Peace" symbolizes truth and youth. Let me explain these answers to you on the matter of symbolism. Brinker tries to get Gene to admit that he push Finny off the tree, trying to find the truth in the situation. Also he gets Finny and Gene a room trying to make Gene come clean about the accented. In his quest to find truth he shows the skills of a true detective. Brinker also symbolizes youth for he is trying to get Gene to enlist with him, wanting to start the life that is ahead for all of them. A life that dies at the stage of youth.
Brinker was a very likable character in the novel. "Almost every one liked Brinker" (Knowles 87). He was also never a person for boring moments in the Devon school. "He never let a dull spot" (Knowles 87). He was also a crappie poet if you ask me "The war is a bore"(Knowles 92). He also had the personality of someone that is takes stuff very seriously even if it is a "case" or a thing of cider, he will fight until he has it.
Brinker shows the theme of "The truth will set you free" and "The truth will come out". No matter how much you deny or how much you cover up the truth will find you. When it does it will rub in your face and tell you that you suck and you should have just told the truth. Brinker gives this advice to Gene throughout the novel yet he does not listen. Oh how he will pay for that in the end.
